The History of Leicester bearings

1984

Founded in 1984

In October 1984, Leicester Bearings was founded by Steve and Sharon March. Starting from a one-bedroom flat on London Road, Leicester, the business began its incredible journey with a strong commitment to service and reliability.

1985

LB Move premises

Just a year later, growth demanded more space. Leicester Bearings moved into a 1,000 sq. ft. unit on Freemens Common Industrial Estate—at the heart of Leicester’s thriving agricultural business near the former Cattle Market.

1986

New Additions

With business growing fast, the team expanded. Two internal sales staff joined Sharon in the office, and a van driver came on board to support Steve with daily deliveries.

1993

Purpose Built Premises

Outgrowing its original site, Leicester Bearings moved again—this time into a purpose-built unit on the same industrial estate. The new space allowed for even greater stockholding and efficiency.

1994

On the move…again

Keith Dand joined the company as a young sales and technical assistant. His dedication and expertise helped cement Leicester Bearings’ reputation as a leading supplier in the county. Keith remains with the company to this day and now serves as a Director.

1998

LB Join IADA

Leicester Bearings became a proud member of IADA, a national group of like-minded, independent bearing distributors. This expanded our product offering, access to premium brands, and national supply capability.

2000

Phoenix Belting

In 2000, Leicester Bearings acquired Phoenix Belting—a respected name in flat belting and materials handling products. Many Phoenix customers remain loyal to this day, benefiting from expanded expertise and continuity of service.

2022

A New Generation

In 2022, a new chapter began as Jamie March and Daniel March were appointed Directors, taking over from founder Steve March. With deep roots in the business and a shared passion for its future, the next generation is committed to driving Leicester Bearings forward while upholding its core values.

2024

Mercury Power Transmission Acquired

Leicester Bearings acquired Mercury Power Transmission, a well-respected Leicester-based supplier of power transmission products, whilst retaining staff. This strategic acquisition expanded our capabilities, stock range, and technical expertise in drives, gearboxes, and mechanical solutions. In the same year, we proudly became members of the National Merchant Buying Society (NMBS)—the UK’s leading buying group for independent merchants in the construction and industrial supply sectors.

Loctite & SMC Stockists and ISO Certified

Leicester Bearings became official stockists of Loctite and SMC, expanding our product portfolio with world-leading brands in adhesives, pneumatics, and automation. This year also marked a major milestone in quality and operational excellence as we proudly achieved ISO accreditation—a reflection of our commitment to continuous improvement and high standards.
